May everyone live, and may everyone die, Hello, my love, and my love, goodbye.

Leonard Cohen (21 septembrie 1934 Montreal – 07 noiembrie 2016 Los Angeles)

Happy landing in Paradise, Mr. Cohen! I hope the Lord of Songs is merciful.

To those few high school girls/who preferred my work to Dylan’s/I leave my stone ear/and my disposable Franciscan ambitions

I don’t really understand that process called reincarnation but if there is such a thing I’d like to come back as my daughter’s dog

I didn’t kill myself / when things went wrong / I didn’t turn / to drugs or teaching / I tried to sleep / but when I couldn’t sleep / I learned to write / I learned to write / what might be read / on nights like this / by one like me

PS We are ugly, but we have music (Janis Joplin)

Well he went out in a blaze of glory. Died with his boots on – or his suit on – having delivered a masterpiece before he left, “You Want It Darker” is one of his richest, deepest and most beautiful albums in a lifetime of rich, deep and beautiful work. He sang himself back home in that album, to Montreal where they held the memorial today. When at the age of 15 Leonard first encountered the poetry of Lorca he heard the music of the synagogue his ancestors founded. So many stories about musicians and poets have an unhappy ending but not Leonard, he was ready, and he didn’t linger once his work was done. He knew darkness, looked right into its eyes, could even see the funny side. “This world is full of conflicts and things that cannot be reconciled but there are moments”, he said, “when we can embrace the whole mess” (Sylvie Simmons)

In 1972, Cohen played a show in Jerusalem, and famously walked off stage several times saying he was unable to perform. He eventually stopped the show after dropping acid and then becoming overcome with emotion after the audience sang Haveinu Shalom Aleichem to him.
“How sweet can an audience possibly be?” Cohen told The New Yorker in an interview published last month. “So I go out on the stage with the band . . . and I started singing ‘So Long, Marianne.’ And I see Marianne straight in front of me and I started crying. I turned around and the band was crying, too. And then it turned into something in retrospect quite comic: the entire audience turned into one Jew! And this Jew was saying, ‘What else can you show me, kid? I’ve seen a lot of things, and this don’t move the dial!’ And this was the entire skeptical side of our tradition, not just writ large but manifested as an actual gigantic being!

Adam Cohen (& Lorca Chen) “My sister and I just buried my father in Montreal. With only immediate family and a few lifelong friends present, he was lowered into the ground in an unadorned pine box, next to his mother and father. Exactly as he’d asked. As I write this I’m thinking of my father’s unique blend of self-deprecation and dignity, his approachable elegance, his charisma without audacity, his old-world gentlemanliness and the hand-forged tower of his work. There’s so much I wish I could thank him for, just one last time. I’d thank him for the comfort he always provided, for the wisdom he dispensed, for the marathon conversations, for his dazzling wit and humor. I’d thank him for giving me, and teaching me to love Montreal and Greece. And I’d thank him for music; first for his music which seduced me as a boy, then for his encouragement of my own music, and finally for the privilege of being able to make music with him. Thank you for your kind messages, for the outpouring of sympathy and for your love of my father

“In 1966, Cohen told his friend and frequent interlocutor Adrienne Clarkson that poetry was in some ways analogous to polishing shoes. She questioned this remark. He replied, “If you want people to have shiny shoes, you want to write those very good kinds of instructions
